Kids on a Nature Walk

Third Grade Education Program Docents
The nature walk program consists of a four-part, in-class educational unit covering local ecology, native plants, geology, history, Native-American culture, mammals, reptiles and insects. Lessons are taught by Land Conservancy educators and trained docents, with assistance from classroom volunteers. Almost all of the walks take place during the spring.
Docents are needed to participate in the education program. Generally recruits assist another docent for the first year, before taking responsibility for a specific school. Docents are paid a stipend for the time they actually work in the classroom, but most volunteer significant extra time, which we greatly appreciate. They meet with the docent group several times per year, and can attend optional monthly training walks with our Education Director.
Volunteers are needed at each school to assist with the classroom work. After training, parents handle the stations that the students visit Others walk with groups of students on the nature walk.
Saturday Nature Walks
The Land Conservancy holds nature walks on the second Saturday of every month. Additional leaders are needed for the walks. Potential leaders generally attend the leaders' walks, which take place about a week before each scheduled walk. They may also attend the Education Director's monthly training walks. When they are ready, they begin leading walks.
George F Canyon Volunteers
The charming George F Canyon Nature Center and Canyon can use a number of different types of volunteers. The Center is located on Palos Verdes Drive East, just south of Palos Verdes Drive North. The hours required are minimal - here's your chance to make a difference with a small amount of time.
Staffing the Center - Volunteers are needed to stay in the Center whenever it is open, generally from 10-4 on Saturdays and Sundays. The volunteer needs to be able to speak generally about the natural history of the canyon, explain the exhibits of the Center and direct visitors to the trail. There is also a small gift shop in the Center, and the volunteer will use the register to make sales.
Gift Shop Manager - We would like to have one person to manage the gift shop, selecting items to be sold and keeping track of inventory.
Steering Committee - George F Canyon has a community based Steering Committee that helps make decisions about the Center and provides support for its activities. See Committees.
Hike leader/birthday party leader - The Center holds number of popular activities, including nature walks and birthday parties. Docents are needed to assist with all of these activities.
