PALOS VERDES PENINSULA LAND CONSERVANCY

$1 MILLION ACQUISITION AND RESTORATION CAMPAIGN

We have a rare opportunity to purchase the last available open space on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The 191-acre property known as Upper Filiorum links existing reserves to form a critical wildlife corridor.

The purchase price of the Upper Filiorum property is $6.5 million. Government agencies are providing $6.1 million and the community must raise $400,000 by December 31, 2009 to complete the acquisition.

With government funding providing 94% of the purchase price, the cost to the community is less than $2,100 an acre, and every $1 contributed brings in over $16 dollars of government funding!

The funding challenge for this additional land goes beyond the acquisition price to include tasks legally required for the conservation easement such as conducting baseline vegetation and wildlife surveys; along with working on trails, installing signage and restoring native habitat.

In addition, we need to recover from the recent wildfire that blackened 180 acres and damaged large sections of native plants. The silver lining is that the fire also cleared out invasive plants and weeds and has opened a window of opportunity to seed native wildflowers, grasses and shrubs.

The $1 million campaign will cover the acquisition of the Upper Filiorum property ($400,000) and integrating the new land into the preserves along with the fire recovery efforts ($600,000).

An Acquisition and Restoration Fund has been created for the campaign and the top priority is to complete the Upper Filiorum acquisition by December 31, 2009.

"Preserving land and restoring habitat for the enjoyment and education of all"

Our vision is the creation and management of large blocks of natural open space where visitors may enjoy peaceful solitude, where children and adults can learn about the natural environment, and where locally native plants and animals will exist in a secure environment.

Since its founding in 1988, PVPLC has protected 1400 acres of open space as nature preserves on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

The PVPLC has an obligation to maintain or increase the wildlife habitat value of these preserved lands and keep them open and available for public use in perpetuity. We encourage strong community involvement and support by connecting people of all ages with the land through nature walks, innovative environmental education programs, and outdoor stewardship volunteer opportunities.

PVPLC works cooperatively with cities, property owners and environmental groups to acquire additional land from willing sellers, restore the native habitat, and promote the conservation of natural open space on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
