Dale, Nancy, Flowering Plants: Santa Monica Mountains, Coastal and Chaparral Regions of Southern California, Capra Press. This is an identification book that covers most of the native plants and wildflowers that grow on the P.V. Peninsula.

Keator, Glenn, Complete Garden Guide to the Native Shrubs of California, Chronicle Books, 1994. These two books have a tremendous amount of information on just about any native plant that is suited for home garden cultivation.
Lenz, Lee and Dourley, John, California Native Trees and Shrubs, Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, 1981. This is an authoritative text that evolved from many years of the authors' first hand experience growing natives. It may be too technical for some.

Sunset Western Garden Book, Sunset Books, Sunset Publ. Corp, 1995. "The Bible" for the western gardener. Chock full of information for gardening in general, but has many native plants in the encyclopedia portion.
Tekulsky, Mathew, The Butterfly Garden, Harvard Common Press, 1985. Tells how to attract butterflies to your yard with flowers and larval food plants, many of which are native.
